5 Underrated Asian Destinations (And Where To Stay There)

As the largest and most populous continent on Earth, Asia is home to some of the world’s most coveted travel destinations. Bangkok, Bali, Kyoto, Dubai, Osaka, Jaipur, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Mumbai … you’ll find them all, and so many more iconic cities, here. A place where soaring skyscrapers and futuristic metropolises meet white sand beaches and jagged mountaintops, Asia has a special kind of magic that intrigues and captivates, beckoning adventurous travelers to come and experience its wonder for themselves. And, while the beloved destinations mentioned above have probably already earned a spot atop intrepid travelers’ vacation wish lists, there is much to be discovered when travelers dare to stray off the beaten path. Come with us as we explore five underrated Asian destinations as well as a few options for where to stay while there.

Taipei, Taiwan

Described as “underrated,” “awesome,” “chill” and “clean,” a quick Google search for “Taipei, Taiwan” reveals a myriad of message boards and forums touting the destination as one of Asia’s most underrated cities. Often bypassed for neighboring countries like Thailand and Japan, Taiwan is an overlooked island oasis, and travelers who take a chance on it won’t be disappointed. Returning our sights to Taipei specifically, visitors to this modern metropolis will find themselves spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do with world-class shopping, intriguing museums and cultural sights, lively night markets, relaxing hot springs, unrivaled nature and no shortage of scrumptious foods to sink their teeth into. Time and time again, Taipei is applauded for its kind and welcoming locals, and Taiwan is cited by the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association as “one of the most progressive countries in Asia for LGBTQ+ people, both in legislation as in public opinion.”

Where To Stay

Taipei is famous for its high-end hotels, many of which are located in Xinyi, the city’s luxury district. According to Tripadvisor, Palais de Chine Hotel; Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei; The Gaia Hotel, Taipei; and Grand Hyatt Taipei are among the most popular.

Ipoh, Malaysia

Named one of Asia’s most underrated places by CNN in a January 2023 article, the internet is abuzz with talk that Ipoh, Malaysia is the hidden gem destination we’ve all been missing. And, at just a quick, one-hour flight or, a not-so-quick seven-hour drive from Singapore, this lesser-known city, with its soaring limestone hills, impressive colonial-era architecture and intricate mosques and temples, has proven to be worth the trek. In addition to its close proximity to Singapore, Ipoh is only a two-hour train ride from vibrant Kuala Lumpur making it easily accessible. As a relatively undiscovered destination, the city is affordable too, especially in comparison to other Southeast Asian vacation spots. Whether they’re trying to keep to a budget or just want to explore someplace new, travelers will love Ipoh for its tasty eats — think dim sums, white coffee and Malaysian chicken rice —, colorful street art and decor, amazing natural areas like Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple and more.

Where To Stay

According to Tripadvisor, The Haven All Suite Resort, Ipoh; Lost World Hotel; The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat; Travelodge Ipoh; WEIL Hotel; and The Haven All Suite Resort, Ipoh are top contenders when it comes to the region’s top-rated hotels.

Suzhou, China

Just 40 minutes away by train, a trip to the Chinese city of Suzhou makes for a jarring contrast to the hustle and bustle of futuristic Shanghai. Maintaining a more traditional feel despite its population of 10 million+ people, this under-the-radar destination is known for its charming canals, historic bridges and sprawling landscaped gardens. By day, sightseeing at famed attractions like Tiger Hill and Cloud Rock Pagoda top the itinerary, while by night, popular spots like Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street are aglow with traditional paper lanterns and energetic markets. Those looking to add a few quirky stops to their list won’t want to miss The Seven Cats of Shantang Street, the Twin Pagodas, Chongyuan Temple’s Guanyin Statue and, of course, the city’s unmissable London Tower Bridge Replica.

For a beach getaway in a destination that’s more frequented by locals than tourists, vacationers won’t want to miss Hua Hin, a resort town in Thailand that doubles as one of the country’s best-kept secrets. A place with ties to royalty, Thai monarchs have vacationed in Hua Hin since the late 1890s, and, with its sandy shores, sparkling blue waters and scenic cliffsides, it’s not hard to see why. In addition to fun in the sun, Hua Hin has plenty to offer visitors in regards to sightseeing and entertainment with opportunities for wildlife encounters in nearby Kui Buri National Park, shopping and dining at thronging markets and vineyard adventures in Monsoon Valley. While not directly in the city, Khao Luang Cave, with its dramatic stalactites and remarkable shrines and statues, is easily accessible via a guided tour.

Tripadvisor ranks Hua Hin Marriott Resort & Spa; Hyatt Regency Hua Hin; Let’s Sea Hua Hin Al Fresco Resort; The Standard, Hua Hin; and InterContinental Hua Hin Resort, an IHG Hotel as some of the city’s best accommodations.

Nagasaki, Japan

Home to Japan’s second-oldest trading port, most people know Nagasaki for its ties to World War II when the city was tragically struck by an atomic bomb in the summer of 1945. And while its harrowing past might leave some to ponder if the destination is safe today — spoiler alert, it’s not radioactive — and worthy of visiting today, the answer is a clear, unequivocal “yes.” Beyond war-related sightseeing — which, BTW, travelers will certainly want to take the time to visit essential spots like Peace Park Nagasaki and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum — visitors will love spending their days exploring colorful shrines and temples, beautiful gardens and fascinating specialty museums.
